Ľudia nimi opovrhujú, považujú ich za zlo a myslia si, že ich existencia je prekliatím. Deti žijú v permanentnom strachu, že na nich niekto brutálne zaútočí. Kvôli vraždám mnoho detí s albinizmom žije v táboroch. Odmietnutí spoločnosťou a odtrhnutí od rodiny. Aby ostali v bezpečí, musia ostať vyčlenení zo spoločnosti. Zaobchádza sa s nimi zle, musia sa skrývať a držať bokom, ľudia sa im vysmievajú.

Okrem povier im však v Tanzánii hrozí aj iné nebezpečenstvo. Očiam a koži týchto detí chýba pigmentácia, čo znamená, že nemajú prirodzenú ochranu, ktorú poskytuje melanín pred nebezpečným africkým slnkom. Výsledkom sú závažné popáleniny, ktoré musia trpieť každý jeden deň znova a znova. Výsledkom sú hnedé fľaky, hlavne na tvári, čo môže viesť ku vzniku rakoviny kože.

Rôzne organizácie robia čo môžu, aby do afrických krajín dostali opaľovacie krémy a rôzne iné ochranné prostriedky, ktoré by mohli deťom s albinizmom pomôcť. Medzi také organizácie patrí napríklad „Under the Same Sun“ (Pod jedným slnkom) z Kanady, “Stichting Afrikaanse Albino’s”, či “Stichting Inside the Same” z Holandska. Tieto deti potrebujú každú jednu pomocnú ruku.

The fears and superstitions surrounding albinism run very deep in Tanzanian society. So deep that many women who give birth to a child with albinism are told to kill the baby at birth. If she refuses, she and the baby will become outcasts. Many children with albinism are denied the most fundamental of human rights. They are despised and taught that they are evil, that their existence is a curse. They live in constant fear of brutal attacks.
