July 16, 2025, Semaphore beach, South Australia: Brown foam formed by an algal bloom accumulates at the base of a pylon of the Semaphore jetty. A devastating algal bloom (Karenia mikimotoi) is currently affecting South Australia's metropolitan beaches, causing discoloured water and foam and impacting various marine wildlife. The most devastating impact has been on marine life, with widespread mortalities observed across a variety of species, including various fish, sharks, rays and a wide range of invertebrates. While not harmful to humans, this bloom, which began in March, is believed to be exacerbated by a marine heatwave, nutrient influx from the 2022-23 River Murray flood, and unprecedented cold-water upwelling in late 2023-early 2024.
